I think I have Dr. Ben’s West Point Scholarship “offer” beat. Fifty-five years ago while looking at schools for undergrad studies, I sent out postcards asking colleges & universities to send me catalogues. Remember, this was a day or two before the internet and, if one wanted to know about a school, the college catalogue was the source. In the midst of receiving bunches of those cool books, there was a letter … a letter of acceptance to Central Michigan University. I can remember thinking, “I don’t think I want to go there.” But, I also thought, “Hoohah, I got accepted to college.” Those folks had to be pretty desperate to fill up the rolls to send out an acceptance to a kid in CNY who had merely sent a 3c postal card seeking their catalogue.
